Greater Changhua 1 & 2a

Taiwan’s CS Wind and Chin Fong Machine Industrial have completed the fabrication of all 111 wind turbine tower sections needed for the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind project.

The towers, which are being transported to the pre-assembly site at the Port of Taichung, will support 111 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD offshore wind turbines, the Asia Pacific variant, at the project site 35-50 kilometres off the coast of Changhua County.

Wind turbine installation is already underway at the site. The first Siemens Gamesa 8 MW unit was installed in March by Seajacks Scylla and the wind farm produced its first power in the second half of April, after the installation and energisation of the first batch of turbines.

The project’s developer Ørsted signed contracts with Port of Taichung in 2020 to lease and upgrade wharfs at the port for the wind farm’s construction work as well as for operations and maintenance (O&M).

The following year, Siemens Gamesa awarded Global Wind Service Taiwan the pre-assembly work for the Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind farms.

The wind farms are scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the year.

The 605 MW Greater Changhua 1 wind farm is owned by Ørsted (50 per cent), and a consortium comprising Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) and the Taiwanese private equity fund, Cathay PE (50 per cent).

The 295 MW Changhua 2a is solely owned by Ørsted.
