Japanese utility JERA and Corio Generation, the new specialist offshore wind business of Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG), announced on 30 June that they were ready to bid for the third phase of Taiwan’s offshore wind zonal development with their Formosa 3 project.

JERA and Corio (GIG at the time) have already partnered in Taiwan on the Formosa 1 and Formosa 2 offshore wind projects, now in operation and under construction, respectively.

JERA joined the Formosa 3 project in 2020 after reaching an agreement with GIG and EnBW and acquiring 43.75 per cent of the project.

Formosa 3, located offshore the Changhua county off the central-western coast of Taiwan, comprises three separate sites with a total potential capacity of 2 GW, making it the largest offshore wind project under development in Taiwan, according to GIG.

It is estimated that, if built to full capacity, Formosa 3 would generate enough green energy to power the equivalent of between 1.5 to 2 million Taiwanese households.

The project was granted Environmental Impact Assessment approval in 2018.
