Ireland-based Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG), part of Venterra Group, has entered into a collaboration with local Japanese companies Geo Marine Service and Nikken Sekkei to offer a range of services, from survey to obtaining certification, to the Japanese offshore wind market.
According to GDG, the development of offshore wind farms in Japan brings some unique challenges, such as earthquakes, typhoons, and unusual geological formations.
Through this new collaboration, GDG will combine its knowledge in offshore engineering and geoscience with the knowledge of the two local Japanese companies to offer services in relation to survey specification, wind turbine foundation design, and certification process support.
“The GDG team are experts at finding innovative engineering solutions to support some of the most challenging offshore wind projects around the world and we look forward to building on our current base of foundation design projects in Japan”, said Paul Doherty , Founder of GDG and Executive Vice President of Engineering at Venterra Group.

The Japanese government aims to deploy 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 30-45 GW by 2040, including floating wind, as part of its target to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
However, the Japanese service supply chain required to make this happen has not been sufficiently established, GDG said.
“Our aim is to offer solutions for these challenges through combining our extensive experience in onshore wind with GDG and Nikken Sekkei Ltd, who can introduce the latest international technologies and knowhow”, said Ken Yoshizumi , Representative Director of Geo Marine Service.
To date, GDG has supported 35,000 MW of offshore wind globally. The company worked on several major offshore wind projects in the UK , EU , and Asia .
