Marine Power Systems (MPS) has picked TSC Engineering to provide the design and development of the tensioner deployment system for its floating wind and wave energy project.

The company plans to demonstrate the floating platform DualSub which can be configured to harness wind and wave energy or as a combined solution at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) test site in northern Spain.

The deployment system is used to execute the submersion of the platform and hook up to the moorings when the platform is on site.

According to MPS, the system simplifies the hook-up process and eliminates the need for large and specialist vessels for the deployment, and also improves the safety of installation with the whole operation controlled remotely with no personnel onboard during the tensioning operation.

The system is removable and once a platform is fully deployed it is removed and utilised on the next platform being installed at the site, MPS said.

“We are continuing to build our best-in- class team here at Marine Power Systems. Our partners and suppliers are very much part of that team and this latest collaboration with the team at TSC brings invaluable experience in equipment design and complex offshore engineering projects”, said Graham Foster , CTO at Marine Power Systems.

The megawatt-scale demonstrator project will begin operation in early 2023.

Back in 2019, MPS received GBP 4.3 million in funding from the European Regional Development Fund to accelerate the development of DualSub.

Last year, the UK-based company appointed Principia as the lead contractor on the detailed design and engineering of the floating platform, with Bourbon Subsea Services taking a supporting role in the project.
