EnBW and BP will deploy two floating LiDARs this month at the offshore site of their wind energy project Morven in Scotland, located some 60 kilometres off the coast of Aberdeen.

Two metocean instrumentation systems, one underwater noise monitoring system, and one floating LiDAR will be deployed at each of two locations within the project site: Morven North and Morven South.

The metocean equipment will remain at the Morven site until September next year, while the floating LiDARs will continue operating until September 2024.

EnBW and BP secured a seabed lease for the site in the ScotWind auction at the beginning of this year.

The offshore wind farm has a potential generating capacity of 2.9 GW, sufficient to power the equivalent of more than 3 million homes, according to the developers.

In July, the developers signed a reservation and collaboration agreement with Forth Ports under which the Port of Leith will serve as the marshalling port for the Morven offshore wind project.

Earlier this year, BP and EnBW said they would establish their operational centre in Scotland, and BP said it would make Aberdeen its global operations and maintenance centre of excellence for offshore wind, creating up to 120 new direct jobs and expected to contribute up to GBP 40 million per year to the economy. The offshore wind development will include investments in infrastructure, ports, harbours and shipyards, including the construction of four ships to support EnBW and BP’s offshore wind projects across the UK, subject to technical and commercial due diligence, the developers said.

The two companies are also developing the Morgan and Mona offshore wind projects in the UK, which were selected in the UK Round 4 leasing at the beginning of 2021.
