Vena Energy, a portfolio company of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), has announced that it will launch two offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 1.8 GW to participate in auctions under Taiwan’s Phase 3 offshore wind zonal development.
The first offshore wind project, called Wei-Na, will have a capacity of 1,200 MW and will be located 20 kilometres off the coast of Miaoli County, with a site area of about 126 square kilometres and water depths ranging from 52 to 78 metres.
The 600 MW Wei-Long offshore wind farm will be located 43 kilometres outside Changhua County and spans an area of approximately 76 square kilometres, and a depth of about 40-62 metres.
According to Vena Energy, both projects are expected to use large wind turbines with a single capacity of 14 MW to 20 MW.
“The selected offshore wind sites have been carefully assessed to exclude environmentally sensitive and restricted areas. We will utilize our local experience and continue to engage with all our stakeholders to develop our offshore wind pipeline and contribute to Taiwan’s net-zero emission target”, said Will Feng , General Manager of offshore wind development in Taiwan.
Taiwan is about to launch the third round of tenders under its block development approach to offshore wind. Through the first two offshore wind auctions, held in April and June 2018, the Taiwanese Government allocated 5.5 GW to projects that are scheduled to be up and running by 2025.
In August last year, Taiwanese Government finalised the allocation plan for its Round 3 offshore wind tenders, which will be procuring project development for wind farms scheduled to go online from 2026 to 2035, during which period a total of 15 GW of new capacity will be added.
The first phase of Round 3 tenders will be held for projects that will be put into operation in 2026/2027.
