Anbaric Invites New York Bight Offshore Wind Developers to Team Up

Anbaric Development Partners has released a Notice of Solicitation for offshore wind developers with projects in the New York Bight who wish to deliver energy and renewable energy credits into the New York State Bulk Power System via the transmission facility Juno Power Express.

The US electric transmission system developer wants to join forces with developers who have executed a lease with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to submit one or more responses to the New York State Energy & Research Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) request for proposals (RFP) for offshore wind energy projects that will deliver a total of 2,000 MW of generation capacity to the New York grid.

The offshore wind solicitation, whose results are expected to be announced in early 2023, includes the first phase of the USD 500 million investment in offshore wind ports, manufacturing, and supply chain infrastructure, as well as a “meshed ready” offshore transmission configuration.

Anbaric opened its solicitation to collaborate with the offshore wind lease holders in the New York Bight who want to supply electricity to shore via its Juno Power Express facility, which can provide up to 1,200 MW of delivery capacity via a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system.

Offshore wind developers can send their responses to Anbaric until 5 October 2022.

“The Juno site’s proximity to the existing LIPA Ruland Road 138 kV Substation and location within the Route 110 Corridor offers an optimal and well-thought-out solution to efficiently deliver locally sourced offshore wind power to Long Island homes and businesses”.

According to the transmission system developer, Juno Power Express includes a 17.7-mile, fully engineered route from the Long Island coastline to property under control of Anbaric that is well suited for the construction of a converter station with a 1.2 GW capacity.

This month, Anbaric submitted an Article VII application for Juno Power Express as part of a permitting process that will ensure the transmission project is prepared to connect new offshore wind generation to the regional grid.

The New York Bight is home to several large-scale offshore wind projects, following the record-breaking lease sale at the beginning of this year, when BOEM awarded lease rights for six sites, gathering a total of USD 4.37 billion in the process.

The developers who secured lease rights are: Bight Wind Holdings (a joint venture between RWE Renewables and National Grid), Attentive Energy (TotalEnergies), Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Bight (Shell and EDF Renewables), Invenergy Wind Offshore, OW Ocean Winds East (an existing joint venture between EDP Renewables and Engie), and Mid-Atlantic Offshore Wind (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners).

New York State has five offshore wind projects in active development, the largest portfolio in the nation, with its first offshore wind farm, the South Fork project, currently under construction.

The five projects in construction or advanced stages of development, which total more than 4,300 MW in generation capacity, are: South Fork (130 MW), Sunrise Wind (924 MW), Empire Wind 1 (816 MW), Empire Wind 2 (1,260 MW) and Beacon Wind (1,230 MW).
