A consortium between DORIS and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has been awarded a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract by Corio Generation and TotalEnergies for its Ulsan Gray Whale 3 floating offshore wind project in South Korea.
The FEED contract covers the full integrated scope of activities related to the floating units, including the design, procurement and installation of the floaters and their station keeping systems, the procurement, laying and connections of the inter-array cables to the floaters as well as the activities related to the integration of the turbines on the floating foundations.
The consortium said it will enhance and scale up the Hi-Float design, which was approved by Bureau Veritas last year and developed for the Jeju floating offshore wind project pilot, to accommodate the high-power turbines of the Ulsan Gray Whale wind farm.
“Our recent success on the Jeju Wind project, the first floating wind pilot in South Korea, and our two decades of experience in the offshore wind business give our consortium a unique opportunity to make the Gray Whale development the flagship project of Asia”, said Francis Carmigniani , EAME-APAC Regional Manager at DORIS.
Prior to this, Corio Generation and TotalEnergies selected a consortium comprising Technip Energies, Subsea 7, and Samkang M&T to perform FEED for their offshore wind project which covers engineering for the floating foundation, mooring, and inter-array scale in collaboration with a wind turbine supplier.
Ulsan Gray Whale 3 is planned to be built around 60 to 70 kilometres from Onsan Port in Ulsan. The wind farm is one of the three phases of the 1.5 GW offshore wind project that the partners are developing off the coast of Ulsan.
A year ago, Corio Generation and TotalEnergies obtained an electric business license (EBL) from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s Electricity Regulatory Commission for the project’s first phase of 504 MW.

Upon being granted the licence last year, the companies said that detailed environmental impact assessments would commence immediately on the first phase, with construction expected to start in 2024.
