Milan-based company, Np Pozzallo Wind s.r.l., has applied for a maritime concession with the Italian authorities to build an 800 MW floating wind farm in the Malta Channel, some 55 kilometres off the town of Pozzallo on the island of Sicily.
The developer is seeking a 40-year maritime concession to build the 54-turbine Pozzallo offshore wind farm and connect it to the grid via cables that will make landfall in the Municipality of Pozzalo.
The application was submitted to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility and the Port Authority of the town of Pozzallo.
The wind farm will feature 44 wind turbines with a nominal power of 15 MW each, ten 14 MW units, and a floating substation.
According to the project’s technical report, the developer intends to install the Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines on the wind farm.
The project also includes the construction of a 200 MW storage plant located in the municipality of Chiaramonte Gulfi. The developer has not revealed the construction timeline for the project.
Np Pozzallo Wind s.r.l. is a special-purpose company established by Agon Engineering, Entrope s.r.l., and Seahorse Wind.
This is not the only floating wind project planned to be installed in the Malta Channel, off the southern part of Sicily.
As reported by our sister site, Offshore Energy, a project with a capacity of over 900 MW is planned to be built some 25 kilometres off Pozzallo.
