Vattenfall has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Shell in the UK, where the oil and gas major will be using some of the electricity produced by the Thanet offshore wind farm.

The companies have signed a five-year agreement for the delivery of 300,000 MWh of electricity from Thanet, which corresponds to about one-third of the annual electricity production of the 300 MW offshore wind farm, according to Vattenfall.

The offshore wind farm comprises 100 Vestas V90 wind turbines with an output of 3 MW and has been in operation since 2010.

Thanet is located 12 kilometres off the coast of Thanet district in Kent, England, where Vattenfall has two more operational offshore wind farms, Kentish Flats and Kentish Flats Extension.

In the UK, Shell has also signed up for the electricity that will be produced by Dogger Bank Wind Farm, set to become the world’s largest offshore wind farm once it is completed.

Back in 2020, Shell signed a power offtake agreement for 20 per cent of the 2.4 GW Dogger Bank A and B.

At the end of last year, the company entered into an agreement for 20 per cent of the project’s third phase, Dogger Bank C.
