Hanwha Engineering & Construction (Hanwha E&C) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Norway-headquartered Equinor to jointly develop offshore wind farms in South Korea.
The two companies have agreed to work together to jointly develop offshore wind farms that Hanwha E&C is contracted to build.
Hanwha E&C plans to build offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 2 GW by the end of 2030, which includes a project in Shinan, South Jeolla. The company is also working on building offshore wind projects in Boryeong in South Chungcheong, Goheung and Yeonggwang in South Jeolla and Yangyang in Gangwon as well as Yeongcheon and Yeongwol regions.
The 8.2 GW Shinan offshore wind farm could meet the needs of the 12-million population of Seoul and Incheon. The project is planned to be built in phases and be fully commissioned by 2030.
When it comes to Equinor, the company has developed or is developing a number of offshore wind projects across the globe such as the Dudgeon and Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farms, and Hywind Scotland, the world’s first floating offshore wind farm, all located in the UK.
Equinor also partnered with SSE Renewables and Vårgrønn to deliver the 3.6 GW Dogger Bank offshore wind farm which will take the title of the world’s biggest offshore wind farm once it’s commissioned in 2026.
