Monopile Damaged by Rogue Ship to Be Removed, Contractor Wanted

Vattenfall Hollandse Kust Zuid 1&2, a joint venture between Vattenfall, BASF, and Allianz, has issued an invitation to tender for the removal of the wind turbine monopile foundation damaged in an allision with a ship at the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm earlier this year.

As reported, the rogue cargo vessel Julietta D. allided with one of the monopile foundations on the wind farm on January 31, 2022, causing considerable damage to this monopile.

The vessel also hit the jacket foundation of the wind farm’s substation during the incident.

The tender includes the removal of the damaged foundation, both the secondary steel and the monopile itself, the consortium said.

The tender process is led by Vattenfall’s construction team, with the aim to start the process in the first half of 2023.

Once fully installed and commissioned in the summer of 2023, Hollandse Kust Zuid will become the largest operating offshore wind farm, as well as the first one built without government subsidies.

The wind farm comprises 140 Siemens Gamesa 11.0-200 DD wind turbines scheduled to be installed by March 2023.

The wind farm generated its first power in early August.

According to the latest social media update from Cadeler, the company in charge of transporting and installing the wind turbines at the site some 20 kilometres off the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland, 80 of the 140 turbines have been installed on their monopile foundations.
