First Vineyard Wind 1 Transition Piece Rolls Out

The first of the 62 transition pieces to be built for Vineyard Wind 1, the first commercial-scale offshore wind project in the United States, has been transferred on 2 December from the Windar Renovables’ offshore facilities (Tadarsa Eólica 4) to the Port of Avilés, Spain.

In 2019, Windar Renovables won a contract to manufacture, certify, assemble, inspect, store, and deliver transition pieces for the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind project.

According to the company, the contract will create up to 500 jobs at peak production times at Windar’s facilities in Asturias.

DEME Offshore US is responsible for the transportation and installation of the transition pieces.

The 800 MW Vineyard Wind 1, a 50-50 joint venture between Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) funds CI II and CI III, is currently under construction off the coast of Massachusetts.

The project is located 15 miles (24 kilometres) off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard and will feature 62 Haliade-X 13 MW turbines.

Scheduled to deliver its first power to the grid in 2023, the wind farm will generate enough electricity for more than 400,000 homes and businesses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
