BP and EnBW Granted Electricity Generation Licences for Two UK Offshore Wind Farms

BP and EnBW have received electricity generation licences for the Morgan and Mona offshore wind farms in the UK, for which the two companies jointly secured 60-year leases in the UK Round 4 leasing at the beginning of last year.

The joint venture partners submitted applications for the licences to the UK’s regulator Ofgem through project companies Mona Offshore Wind Limited and Morgan Offshore Wind Limited on 6 August and 21 September, respectively.

Ofgem granted the electricity generation licence for the Mona offshore wind farm on 3 October and for the Morgan project on 17 November.

The Morgan and Mona project sites, located off the Irish Sea coasts of North West England and North Wales, will accommodate a total installed capacity of up to 3 GW. Once completed, the two offshore wind farms will be able to produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of approximately 3.4 million UK households.

BP and EnBW have deployed floating LiDARs and metocean meausrement equipment on both sites last year and are currently holding public consultations.

The first two stages of consultation for Mona have already closed, while the first stage of consultation for Morgan closes today, 13 December.

BP and EnBW are also developing the Morven offshore wind farm in Scotland, located some 60 kilometres off the coast of Aberdeen, which has a potential generating capacity of 2.9 GW, for which the two companies secured a seabed lease in the ScotWind auction at the beginning of this year.
