Verlume Halo

UK-based Verlume has been developing Halo, a scalable, modular battery energy storage system with integrated intelligent energy management, for offshore wind applications.

One of Halo’s key features is that the system is fully rechargeable and can be integrated with marine renewable energy converters to create zero-emission power systems.

It contains state-of-the-art battery technology that provides maximum energy density, safety, and durability, and together with Verlume’s Axonn intelligent energy management system autonomously maximises the available energy in real-time, according to Verlume.

Energy capacity and power output are scalable and configurable to suit the client’s needs, the developer said.

In July, Verlume was one of the companies that RWE selected as the winners of its international innovation competition on ecology and system integration of offshore wind.

A month prior to that, the Aberdeen-based company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with its compatriot Oasis Marine Power to jointly develop intelligent in-field energy storage and charging infrastructure for crew transfer vessels (CTVs).

The partners agreed to evaluate the viability of using an intelligent power conditioning and management system with a powered mooring station to create a microgrid interface within the offshore wind farm.

Integrated as part of the Halo device would be an intelligent power conditioning and management system that could provide intelligent management of the available energy, allowing charging at times of low energy demand from the offshore wind farm, and therefore maximising revenue from power generation, according to the previous news.

With an increase in green hydrogen production, there will be a requirement for stable controlled DC power for electrolysis to operate continuously, Verlume said.

According to the company, Halo can provide regulated DC supply to hydrogen electrolysers on platforms or within turbines.
