Danish transmission system operator (TSO) Energinet has opened a tender for the installation of onshore cables for the connection of the Thor offshore wind farm to the national grid.

The tender includes excavation and cable laying work for a cable connection consisting of two 29-kilometre-long 220 kV cables from the substation at Idomlund to the point of connection (POC) at Volder Mark, and three shorter 220 kV systems internally at Idomlund.

The tender, valued at EUR 12.1 million, is open until 9 January.

To connect the 1 GW Thor offshore wind farm to the grid, Energinet is building a new 220 kV station – as part of the 220/400 kV conversion of the existing 400 kV station in Idomlund.

From there, 29 kilometers of cables will be laid underground to connect to the new 220 kV station constructed at Volder Mark, which is located 4 kilometres from the coastline. At Volder Mark, the electricity generated by the offshore wind farm will be delivered to the grid.

The delivery, installation, and testing of the onshore export cable system is anticipated to take place in 2024.

As reported earlier, the offshore wind developer who won the Thor tender, RWE, will pay for the entire offshore electrical high voltage system up to POC and also for the onshore grid connection.

In October, RWE announced Siemens Energy as the preferred supplier for the design construction, and installation of the onshore substation, and HSM Offshore Energy for the offshore substation and its jacket foundation.

Once fully commissioned in 2027, the 1 GW Thor offshore wind farm will become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm and will be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households.
