SPIC Puts First Commercial Offshore Wind Farm Using 11 MW Turbines Into Operation

State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) connected the fully capacity of its Shenquan Phase 2 (Jieyang Shenquan 2) offshore wind farm to the grid on 28 December, according to Chinese media .

The 502 MW project, which comprises 34 11 MW wind turbines and 16 units with a nominal output of 8 MW, is said to be the largest operational, commercial-scale offshore wind farm in China to use 11 MW turbines.

According to SPIC , this is also the world’s first commercial project with 11 MW wind turbines.

The first batch of the 11 MW units were installed at the project site offshore the Guangdong province at the beginning of this month.

Electricity generated by all the 11 MW turbines was now successfully transmitted to the national power grid via the subsea cables, media reports say.

The cable systems for the Shenquan Phase 2 offshore wind farm were delivered by Hengtong Subsea Power Cables, which celebrated the grid connection of the 502 MW project earlier this month.

Hengtong supplied and installed he 220 kV export cables and the 66 kV inter-array cables for the wind farm. The 66 kV subsea cables are also said to be first used in this project in China.
