COWI has been awarded a contract by Vattenfall for the oversight of the detailed design phase of the onshore cable installation for the 1.4 GW Norfolk Boreas offshore wind farm in the UK.

Under the contract, COWI will review the plans – devised by J. Murphy & Sons – to install 60 kilometres of cables that will connect where the Norfolk Boreas development makes landfall at Happisburgh, to the National Grid substation.

The route will also serve the Norfolk Vanguard site to reduce construction times, local disruption, and environmental impact.

“We’re delighted to have COWI on board providing oversight of the work onshore, and making sure that it’s carried out safely and sustainably. This is another step forward for the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone which is a vital part of the UK’s net zero future and a boost for domestic supply chain and new, green collar jobs “, said Rob Anderson , Project Director of Vattenfall’s Norfolk Zone.

Located 47 kilometres off the Norfolk coast in southeast Britain, Norfolk Boreas is the first phase of Vattenfall’s Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone which also includes the Norfolk Vanguard offshore wind project.

Subject to a final investment decision, construction on the project will begin this year and the wind farm is expected to produce its first power in 2027.

Export cables for both offshore wind projects will be delivered by DEME Offshore and LS Cable & System.

Last month, Vattenfall announced that it will increase the capacity for the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone off the UK from 3.6 GW to over 4.2 GW.

This will take place with no extra impact on local residents, with its construction taking place within existing plans, according to the project’s developer.

This will take the total of homes powered by the Norfolk wind farms to around 4.6 million and make the Norfolk Zone one of the largest offshore wind zones in the world.
