BayWa r.e. Unveils Floating Wind Project Offshore Sardinia

The Italian offshore wind developer, Regolo Rinnovabili, a subsidiary of BayWa r.e., has applied for a 30-year maritime concession to build and operate a 510 MW floating wind farm off the northwest of Sardinia.

Regolo Rinnovabili submitted the application with the Guardia Costiera di Porto Torres to install 34 wind turbines with an individual capacity of 15 MW, with an accompanying cable and grid infrastructure, in the Sardinian Sea.

The wind farm would be located at a minimum distance of 19 kilometres from the municipalities of Bosa and San Vero Milis, and some 18 kilometres off the Island of Cabras.

The concession covers an area of around 270 square kilometres with average water depths of 185 metres.

The export cable will have a length of around 49 kilometres and will connect to the national grid at the Port of Alghero.

This is the second floating wind farm project to be proposed to be built northwest of Sardinia, the first being the 1.35 GW project proposed by AvenHexicon back in 2022.

Spain’s Acciona is another developer to apply for a maritime concession to build and operate a floating wind farm off the west coast of Sardinia. Acciona’s project is located between Capo Marargiu and Capo Mannu off the central-west Sardinia.

The two projects, Montalto di Castro and Montalto di Castro, will both have a capacity of 510 MW and consist of 34 15 MW wind turbines, similar to the project proposed off Sardinia. Floating technology will most likely be used for both projects.
