Japan-headquartered JERA has submitted the Primary Environmental Impact Consideration Document for the Oga City, Katagami City and Akita City Offshore Wind Power Generation Project to Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

The Primary Environmental Impact Consideration Document summarizes the results of deliberations concerning environmental conservation issues to be considered at the project planning stage. The document will be posted to JERA’s website on 17 January and be made available for public review.

The offshore wind project will be located off the coast of Oga, Katagami, and Akita municipalities, in the prefecture of Akita, and include as many as 29 wind turbines with a maximum generation capacity of 340 MW.

The turbines will have an individual-rated capacity of between 12 MW and 18 MW and will be installed across an area covering approximately 53.19 square kilometres.

The company said that the favorable wind conditions and shallow seabed off Oga, Katagami, and Akita cities make the area suitable for the development of bottom-fixed offshore wind farms.

JERA has previously participated in offshore wind projects in the UK and Taiwan, and the utility plans to apply the experience and expertise gained in the construction and operation of these projects to the Oga City, Katagami City and Akita City Offshore Wind Power Generation Project.

In December, the energy firm’s wind project in Taiwan was one of the few selected by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

At the beginning of 2022, JERA submitted another Primary Environmental Impact Consideration Document for the Happo Town and Noshiro City Offshore Wind Power Generation Project in Akita Prefecture to the country’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

Japan is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050 and has set a target of deploying 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and 30-45 GW by 2040.
