Jan De Nul has picked Royal Wagenborg to transport monopile foundations for the Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farms in Germany.

The first batch of the TP-less foundations for the Gode Wind 3 project was shipped from Steelwind’s manufacturing site in Nordenham, Germany, to the Port of Eemshaven in the Netherlands in February, ahead of the installation work that is scheduled to start this summer.

In the upcoming months, Wagenborg will perform another 35 voyages with monopiles from Germany and Denmark to the temporary storage in Eemshaven using a specially equipped pontoon (100 × 33 × 7.6 metres).

The Wagenborg Barge 8 is equipped with hydraulically operated saddles and an additional internal ballast system to carry three monopiles per voyage. Wagenborg’s engineers carried out calculations for this method of transport, taking stability, sea conditions, and a weight of 1,500 tonnes per monopile into account, the company said.

Bladt Industries and Steelwind Nordenham will supply monopile foundations to Ørsted’s Gode Wind 3 and Borkum Riffgrund 3 projects, while Jan De Nul is in charge of the transport and installation of the 107 monopile foundations and the secondary steel which will be delivered by Smulders .

The 242 MW Gode Wind 3 and 900 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 wind farms are owned and developed by Danish renewable energy giant Ørsted Wind Power A/S.

Both wind farms are to be built in the German North Sea, starting this summer, with full commercial operation scheduled for early 2025. Once in operation, these wind farms will generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.2 million German households a year.
