Vestas has signed a preferred supplier agreement for a floating offshore wind project in South Korea, the wind turbine manufacturer announced on 31 March, leaving the project and its client unnamed.
Under the agreement, if the project moves forward, Vestas will supply and install 33 units of its V236-15.0 MW model which will make up the 495 MW floating wind farm.
The news comes a few months after the company was named a preferred turbine supplier for the 1.3 GW MunmuBaram floating wind project, developed by a joint venture between Shell and Hexicon, which will also feature the V236-15.0 MW model.
The V236-15.0 MW wind turbine is currently in the prototype stage and is being put through paces at the Østerild National test centre for large wind turbines in Western Jutland, Denmark, where it produced first electricity at the end of December 2022.
This January, Vestas announced a plan to build out a wind energy supply chain in South Korea, which was formalised at a signing ceremony by Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen and South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-Yeol at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos.
The plan, which the company noted was dependent on a growing market for offshore wind in the country, holds an investment potential of several hundred million USD and is expected to help establish a mature industrial supply chain for offshore wind and contribute to creating several thousand direct and indirect jobs as the South Korean wind industry grows, according to Vestas.

Vestas also has a Memorandum of Understanding with South Korea’s Ulsan City, under which the OEM, the City, Ulsan Port Authority, and Sejin Heavy Industries & Construction will cooperate on Ulsan’s ambition to develop a 9 GW floating offshore wind complex by 2030.
