Navantia Seanergies and Windar will manufacture 45 monopiles for Iberdrola for the 1,400 MW East Anglia Three offshore wind farm in the UK.

The production will take place in Navantia-Windar’s monopile factory located in Fene shipyard, in A Coruña, Spain.

The order will involve 900,000 hours over 15 months and will start in June 2023, creating around 450 jobs between Navantia, Windar, and the collaborating subsidiary industry.

The monopiles will have a maximum length of 84 metres, weigh 1,800 tonnes and have a diameter of 10.6 metres. The foundations are for the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm, which is located within the East Anglia Hub in the British waters.

Last month, Haizea Wind Group and ScottishPower signed an agreement for the supply of 50 monopiles for the 1.4 GW offshore wind farm.

The consortium said that this is the largest order for the factory located in Fene, a facility in which Navantia and Windar have invested EUR 36 million. In addition, this is the largest contract for this type of foundation for Navantia-Windar to date.

The works in the factory have involved the adaption of a building for bending thick steel plate of up to 16 metres in diameter, new painting cabins and storage areas for finished product, as well as the latest technology and equipment required for manufacturing.

“This contract is an important step for the Fene factory and for our participation in the offshore wind energy market, consolidating us as a manufacturer that can build the three types of foundations of an offshore wind farm”, said Ricardo Dominguez , President of Navantia.

East Anglia Three, which was awarded Contracts for Difference (CfD) in July last year from the UK Government, is located approximately 70 kilometres from shore in the Southern North Sea.

The project will feature 95 monopile foundations that are planned to be installed by Seaway 7. Construction of East Anglia Three started last year with onshore work on the converter station in Suffolk and along the land cable route, while offshore work is scheduled to begin in 2024.

The wind farm is part of ScottishPower Renewables’ GBP 6.5 billion (around EUR 7.4 billion) East Anglia Hub project which also includes two other offshore wind farms: the 800 MW East Anglia One North and the 900 MW East Anglia Two.

East Anglia Three is expected to be fully operational in 2026.
