Global energy major Shell is joining the VindØ consortium which is aiming to take a leading role in developing and building Denmark’s first energy island.
The announcement follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which Shell signed in June 2022 to join the VindØ consortium.

The other consortium partners are PensionDanmark and PFA – two of Denmark’s largest pension funds – and Andel, Denmark’s largest utility company, as well as Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.

Together the consortium looks forward to the initiation of the tendering process for the energy island and the publishment of the tender material from the Danish Energy Agency,” said Thomas Dalsgaard, a Partner in Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
The consortium’s vision is an artificial energy island in the Danish part of the North Sea, approximately 80-100 kilometres off the Danish west coast, where conditions for green energy production based on offshore wind are optimal.
The island will be able to connect 10 GW of offshore wind to Denmark and other neighboring countries, plus host an innovation zone with potential for large-scale Power-to-X production and energy storage. It would include accommodation and operation and maintenance services from onsite harbour facilities.
To develop the island, a partnership agreement has been signed with DEME, Boskalis, and MT Højgaard.
The consortium expects to participate in the forthcoming tender for the construction of the energy island, where the Danish Energy Agency is expected to nominate a winner during 2024.
