TenneT Probing the Market for BorWin6 Cable System

The construction work has begun on the BorWin6 High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project which will be delivered by TenneT to link 980 MW of offshore wind capacity to the German grid.

Through a consortium with Global Energy Interconnection Research Institute and C-EPRI Electric Power Engineering (GEIRI/CEPRI), McDermott is providing engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) services for an HVDC offshore converter platform, called BorWin kappa, located offshore Germany.

On the onshore converter station, McDermott’s scope includes the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.

Today, the US-headquartered company held the first steel-cutting ceremony at its Jebel Ali fabrication yard in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to mark the commencement of construction for the BorWin6 HVDC project.

Fabrication will be executed from McDermott’s fabrication yards in Dubai and Batam, Indonesia.

To connect the BorWin kappa offshore converter station with the station on land, the project’s cables will be installed along a 235-kilometre-long route.

TenneT will connect the offshore wind turbines from the German North Sea directly to BorWin kappa via 66 kV three-phase cables.

Scheduled to go into operation in 2027, BorWin6 will collect three-phase current generated at the offshore wind farms which will then be converted into direct current and transported to an onshore converter station located near Büttel, Germany.

Situated in the North Sea Cluster 7, BorWin6 is the last offshore grid connection system to be implemented by TenneT in the German North Sea with 320-kilovolt technology. The technological leap to 525 kV and a transmission capacity of 2 GW will be implemented in future projects, TenneT pointed out.

Building on the experiences of the BorWin6 project, McDermott was recently awarded an EPCIC contract by TenneT for two 2 GW HVDC grid connection systems offshore Germany.
