All 62 wind turbines have been installed at the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm in France, developed by Ailes Marines, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Iberdrola.

The first wind turbine was installed in May on position number SB44, located in the northern part of the offshore construction site while the last SG 8.0-167 DD unit was installed at position SB49 on 17 December by Fred Olsen’s Brave Tern jack-up.

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier was responsible for the transportation and installation of the units under a contract signed with Siemens Gamesa in April 2022.

The ship has made 18 rotations from Le Havre, with the components of three to four wind turbines on board.

In the span of eight months, the 62 wind turbines built at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s Le Havre facility were installed on their jacket foundation at the offshore site located 16 kilometres off the northwest coast of France in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in the English Channel.

“We are particularly proud of the work carried out by our teams within the schedule initially announced. Iberdrola once again demonstrates its ability to carry out a large-scale project here in Brittany, and at the same time confirms its status as a leader in offshore wind power. Saint-Brieuc is the first French offshore wind farm and the 4th in Europe developed and built by the group,” said Stéphane Alain Riou , Director of offshore wind Iberdrola France.

The technical commissioning of the 496 MW offshore wind farm started with the connection of the first wind turbine to the national electricity grid in July and it is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2024.

The commissioning is undertaken in phases with the first tranche of 20 per cent already operational, said Ailes Marines.

A second tranche of 50 per cent will be completed in early 2024, rising to 100 per cent in the first quarter of 2024.

On completion, the wind farm will have an installed capacity of 496 MW, producing approximately 1,820 GWh/year, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 835,000 inhabitants (including heating) or nine per cent of the total electricity consumption of Brittany, according to the developer.
