Swedish supplier of engineering, design, and advisory services, AFRY, has revealed that it will support the Colombian Government in the identification of offtake mechanism for commercialisation of offshore wind energy in the country.
According to AFRY, the company’s support will allow the Colombian Government to formulate the mechanism that supports offshore wind energy commercialisation with a long-term outlook.
In particular, AFRY will define the commercialisation mechanisms for electricity generated by offshore wind after reviewing different international commercialisation and financial mechanisms used to promote offshore wind.
The Swedish company’s work will also include the regulatory measures required to adopt and implement these mechanisms.
“We are pleased that we can contribute to this exciting project with the World Bank Group and the Colombian Government and be part of Colombia’s transition towards a clean energy future,” said Jimena Díaz , Country Manager Colombia, AFRY Management Consulting.
In 2022, Colombia established the regulatory framework for the first seabed leasing process and now, the definition of mechanisms to trade offshore wind energy is crucial to provide financial stability and certainty for the project developers, AFRY said.

Last year, the Colombian Government launched an Offshore Wind Roadmap, according to which the country has the potential of installing almost 50 GW of offshore wind capacity with around 27 GW of this said to be best suited for bottom-fixed and 21 GW for floating foundations.
Some of the companies that are interested in developing offshore wind projects in Colombia are Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and BlueFloat Energy.
In May 2022, BlueFloat unveiled its plans to build seven offshore wind farms in Colombia totalling 5.2 GW in capacity.
