Iberdrola Deutschland and O2 Telefónica have signed a long-term power purchase agreement to supply renewable power from the 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.
Under the 15-year agreement, Iberdrola will supply 3,000 GWh of renewable energy to O2 Telefónica from the Baltic Eagle offshore wind project, starting in 2025.
Iberdrola Deutschland said that the energy will power around 8,000 of O2 Telefónica’s current 28,000 mobile phone stations.
O2 Telefónica has set the goal of reducing energy consumption per data volume by 87 per cent by 2025 compared to 2015. The company is also aiming for net zero emissions by 2040.
The Baltic Eagle project is currently under construction in the German Baltic Sea, northeast of the Rügen island off the Pomeranian coast, and is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2024.
The offshore wind farm will comprise 50 Vestas 9.5 MW wind turbines , installed on monopile foundations , and will be linked to the German high-voltage grid via the Ostwind 2 grid connection.
The installation of transition pieces (TPs) and inter-array cables at the project’s offshore site was completed at the end of last year. The TPs were installed in two campaigns with Van Oord utilising Brouwersgracht and Jumbo’s Fairplayer vessels to perform the work.

The 476 MW wind farm will supply approximately 475,000 households with renewable energy while reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 800,000 tonnes per year.
Apart from the PPA signed with 02 Telefónica, Iberdrola also signed agreements with Switzerland-headquartered Holcim , Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH , Amazon , and SHS – Stahl Holding Saar in 2023, with electricity to be sourced from Baltic Eagle.
The 476 MW project is the second of three large-scale offshore wind farms Iberdrola has in Germany, alongside the 350 MW Wikinger and 300 MW Windanker.
Collectively, the three wind projects form the company’s so-called Baltic Hub, which will have a total capacity of more than 1.1 GW by 2026 and account for an investment of about EUR 3.6 billion in total.
