The first Siemens Gamesa wind turbine blades and tower components for Ocean Winds’ Moray West offshore wind farm have arrived at the Port of Nigg in Scotland.

The 882 MW offshore wind farm, developed by Ocean Winds, will comprise 60 wind turbines and will be the first project to feature Siemens Gamesa’s SG 14-222 DD model. The turbines will utilise the PowerBoost feature and have a capacity of 14.7 MW each.

The pre-assembly activity of the 60 units is being managed by Siemens Gamesa, who are also manufacturing a total of 108 B108 blades for the project at their quayside factory in Hull. The first blades left the manufacturing factory in February.

Around the same time, the first nacelles were produced at Siemens Gamesa’s Cuxhaven plant in Germany.

Once assembled, the wind turbines will be transported to the offshore construction site, located 22.5 kilometres from the Caithness coastline, where they will be installed by Cadeler’s Wind Orca , which recently underwent a crane upgrade in Schiedam, the Netherlands.

The installation of Siemens Gamesa 14 MW wind turbines is scheduled to start next month.

The installation of monopiles and transition pieces (TPs) is well underway, with DEME’s Orion installing the foundations and Apollo placing the TPs. The Port of Nigg is also serving the installation of TPs under a separate contract.

Located in the Moray Firth in the northeast of Scotland, the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind farm is expected to generate its first power this year.

Once fully operational in 2025, the project will generate enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million homes, according to Siemens Gamesa.
