Germany-headquartered Skyborn Renewables has submitted a permit application to the Swedish government and Land and Environment for the construction of a 3 GW offshore wind farm. Named Polargrund Offshore, the project is planned to have between 70 and 120 wind turbines.
Located 35 kilometres off the coast, south of Kalix and Haparanda, Polargrund Offshore is expected to generate up to 10 TWh of fossil-free electricity upon completion, which should be enough to power over sen per cent of Sweden’s current electricity consumption, according to Skyborn.
The company said that the project will be vital for meeting the surging demand from Norrbotten’s rapidly expanding industries that are transitioning to cleaner operations.
“Polargrund Offshore is a key project for realizing the business sector’s expansive development plans in Norrbotten and enabling Sweden’s move towards net-zero emissions. In addition to the Polargrund Offshore, the company is developing the 1,020 MW Storgrundet Offshore , located in the Bothnian Sea, the 3.9 GW Eystrasalt Offshore , and the 2.8 GW Fyrskeppet Offshore projects.
