Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind (Atlantic Shores), a joint venture between Shell New Energies US and EDF-RE Offshore Development, has picked Riggs Distler to lead the Cardiff substation expansion programme for Atlantic Shores Project 1.
The contract scope includes the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of all new electrical equipment for an expansion of the 230 kV Cardiff substation located in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County.

The expansion work includes site preparation and the construction of a new electrical enclosure and control building to house a 230 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) with associated controls.
Other improvements include outdoor electrical equipment, 230 kV duct banks, cable trenches, ancillary/auxiliary equipment, and site fencing.

The joint venture holds development rights for an offshore wind zone located some 14 to 32 kilometres off the New Jersey coast, between Barnegat Light and Atlantic City.
Back in June 2021, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) awarded Atlantic Shores with 1,510 MW of offshore wind capacity as part of the State’s second offshore wind solicitation .
Once fully operational, the Atlantic Shores 1 project is expected to generate enough renewable energy to serve more than 700,000 homes while contributing nearly USD 2 billion to the Garden State economy.
