Jan De Nul Selected for Export Cable Installation on Taiwanese Offshore Wind Project

Jan De Nul Group has signed a preferred supplier agreement with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for the installation of high-voltage export cables that will bring renewable energy generated at the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm ashore.

Jan De Nul will connect the offshore substation of the Fengmiao 1 to the Taiwanese onshore grid via two AC high-voltage cables.

For this work, the Belgium company plans to deploy its cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh . The cables have a length of 45 kilometres and 44 kilometres, respectively, and weigh more than 8,000 tonnes together.

Jan De Nul will be responsible for the transport and installation of the cables, including the protection of crossing with other cables.

In March, LS Cable signed an agreement with CIP for the supply of onshore and offshore cables for the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind project.

CIP was awarded capacity for Fengmiao 1 in the first round of Taiwan’s Round 3 Zonal Development Offshore Wind Auction in December 2022.

The entire Fengmiao offshore wind project, located some 35 kilometres off the coast of Taichung in central Taiwan, will have an installed capacity of 1,800 MW.

The construction of the 500 MW Fengmiao 1 is planned to commence in 2025 and the offshore wind farm is expected to enter into commercial operation in 2027.

The project, being developed by Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) on behalf of CIP, will comprise 15 MW offshore wind turbines and will be CIP’s first offshore wind farm in Taiwan to feature an offshore substation.
