Dong Fang Offshore (DFO) has been awarded a charter for a newbuild Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for the 500 MW Fengmiao 1 offshore wind project in Taiwan.

Scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2027, the new CSOV will be used to support the Fengmiao 1 project’s operations and maintenance (O&M).

The CSOV, which will sail under the Taiwanese flag and be of Vard design, shall be capable of supporting foundation, cable installation, turbine, and balance of plant O&M.

Dong Fang Offshore said that the award has been the result of a successful collaboration between CIP and the company on both the Changfang and Xidao and Zhong Neng offshore wind projects, strengthening the long-term cooperation between the two firms.

“CIP was the inaugural charterer of the first Taiwanese construction support vessel, the Orient Constructor, and this new award of CSOV charter demonstrates the long-term investment and support that CIP has made into suppliers like DFO to develop us from a small local vessel supplier into an organization that can deliver large scopes to international standards,” said Polin Chen , CEO of DFO.

At the beginning of July, CIP selected Jan De Nul Group as the preferred supplier for the installation of high-voltage export cables that will bring renewable energy generated at the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm ashore.

Last month, the developer placed an order with South Korean company SK oceanplant for the jacket foundations that will be installed at the project site.

CIP was awarded capacity for Fengmiao 1 in the first round of Taiwan’s Round 3 Zonal Development Offshore Wind Auction in December 2022. The entire Fengmiao offshore wind project, located some 35 kilometres off the coast of Taichung in central Taiwan, will have an installed capacity of 1.8 GW.

The construction of the 500 MW Fengmiao 1 is planned to commence in 2025 and the offshore wind farm is expected to enter into commercial operation in 2027.
