The Mukran Port is upgrading two berths with new heavy load slabs to be used in the construction of the Arkona offshore wind farm.

According to the port, an efficient port infrastructure is required for the growing wind turbines with their components, including transition pieces, rotor blades or tower segments among others.

The conversion of a former RoRo ramp for berth 7a, which has already begun, and the timely construction of such an area at berth 10, will enable Mukran Port to handle turbines with the capacity of more than 7MW, the port said.

The project, financed by E.ON and planned by KMT Port, will be realized by Colcrete – von Essen for Fährhafen Sassnitz GmbH.

The 385MW Arkona offshore wind farm will comprise 60 Siemens 6MW located 35km northeast of the island of Rügen in Germany.

The wind farm, owned by E.ON and Statoil, is scheduled for commissioning in 2019.
