The Port of Rønne in Denmark has been selected as the departure point for the 72 Siemens Gamesa 8MW turbines destined for the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm and will undergo upgrades to service the project.

The first phase of the port upgrades is expected to be completed by October 2019 and includes a 150,000m 2 expansion, an increase of the water depth to 11 meters, a new external wave breaker, a 300-meter-long multi-purpose terminal, as well as a heavy duty Ro-Ro rental.

The Port of Rønne brings many benefits for the project due to its position in the Baltic Sea, Siemens Gamesa’s Project Manager Bent Rasmussen said, emphasizing that the port being located on an island is not an issue, since the components are too big for land transport and will be transported by sea.

According to Rasmussen, the Denmark-based port will enable the reduction of paperwork and will allow the turbine components to come close to the quayside, while the harbor entrance and exit are also in good condition.

“These are the kind of projects that can provide a lot of life on the quayside in Rønne. We have been focused on extensions of our port areas and aimed at the facilities being modern and able to handle as large an operation as the one Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is going to launch. I hope and believe that it will be the start of a lot of other good business projects in our port area,” Thomas Bendtsen , CEO of Rønne Harbour, said.

Vattenfall, the owner and developer of the 605MW wind farm, signed an agreement with Siemens Gamesa in November last year for the supply of 72 8MW wind turbines for the project.

The Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm, currently being built some 15km east of the Danish coast in the southern part of the Baltic Sea, is scheduled for full commissioning in 2021.
