Port of Blyth Kicks Off GBP 3 Million Bates Terminal Redevelopment

The Port of Blyth in the UK has begun redevelopment construction works at its Bates Terminal.

The GBP 3 million project will see the reconstruction and strengthening of the quay on the Bates Terminal site, as well as a kilometer of new roadway being installed to improve access and earthworks to level the development site.

The principal contract for the works has been awarded to civil engineering firm Hall Construction, with completion expected by November.

Once done, the works will unlock 6ha of prime quayside land on-site and provide an additional heavy lift quay.

According to the port, the land development opportunity is expected to generate interest from a range of sectors including offshore wind, renewables and liquid bulks.

“Commencing these works is another major milestone in the development of Port of Blyth,” said Martin Lawlor , Chief Executive of Port of Blyth.

“While the reconstruction of the quay will provide increased flexibility and availability at a time when demand is high, the earthworks on site will open up exciting opportunities for redevelopment on areas of the existing terminal and recently acquired land.”

At the end of last year, the UK East coast port completed the installation of a bespoke wind turbine training facility at the Bates Terminal as part of a GBP 1 million investment in training provision aimed at the offshore energy sector.
