GE Haliade-X Wind Turbine Now Typhoon-Proof

GE Renewable Energy has secured Typhoon certification (Class T certification) from DNV for the Haliade-X offshore wind turbine.

The certificate shows that the Haliade-X can operate safely and efficiently under extreme wind conditions which can often be found in Asia but also in the U.S., where hurricanes occur every year, the turbine maker said.

”Typhoon loads on wind turbines is of critical importance in emerging offshore wind markets such as Taiwan, Japan, Korea as well as parts of the United States,” said Kim Sandgaard-Mørk , Executive Vice President for Renewables Certification at DNV.

”Wind turbines need to be designed for these extreme local environmental conditions to support the ambitious plans to develop multi-megawatt offshore wind projects. With obtaining the DNV Certificate, GE Renewable Energy proves that the largest offshore wind turbine in operation – the Haliade-X – is able to reliably withstand the typhoons that are likely to affect it within their lifetime.”

The Haliade-X is now the most powerful offshore wind turbine to have this certification, GE said.

The Haliade-X prototype, located in Rotterdam and operating at 13 MW, set a new world record in October 2020 by generating 312 MWh of continuous power in one day.

The wind turbine has already received its Full Type Certification from DNV for its 12 MW and 13 MW power ratings.

The Haliade-X 13 MW will power the two first phases of the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm in the UK, while the Haliade-X 14 MW has been selected as the preferred technology for the third and last installment of the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm, located off the coasts of Yorkshire, UK.

The Haliade-X has also been selected as a preferred technology for two major projects in the U.S.; the 1,100 MW Ocean Wind offshore wind farm, and the 800 MW Vineyard Wind 1 offshore wind farm.
