Smulders and Haizea Bilbao have signed a Selected Supplier Agreement for the primary steel for the transition pieces (TPs) that the Belgian manufacturer will deliver for Poland’s 1.2 GW Baltic Power offshore wind farm.
Under the agreement, and subject to signing the final contract, Haizea Bilbao will manufacture the primary steel at its Bilbao facilities, while Smulders will manufacture the secondary steel at its facilities in Poland.
Smulders will also assemble, outfit, coat, and test fully equipped transition pieces, with the assembly to take place at the yard in Hoboken or Newcastle.
The agreement with Spanish Haizea was announced shortly after Smulders secured a contract with Baltic Power, a joint venture between Polish Orlen Group and Canadian Northland Power, for the supply of transition pieces that will be installed on top of the monopile foundations to be delivered by German Steelwind Nordenham.
According to the two companies, this is the second project on which Smulders and Haizea will cooperate and the first one for transition pieces.
The Baltic Power offshore wind farm, located approximately 23 kilometres north of the Baltic Sea coastline, in the vicinity of Choczewo and Łeba, will be the first commercial-scale project in Poland as well as one of the largest in the country.
Offshore construction of the 1.2 GW offshore wind farm, which will have more than 70 turbines with a minimum capacity of 14 MW, is expected to start in 2024 and the project is scheduled to enter operation two years later.
