TECO Electric & Machinery has secured an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to construct an onshore substation for the 1,044 MW Hai Long offshore wind farms in Taiwan.
Under the contract, TECO will construct an onshore substation in the Changhua Binhai Industrial Zone, Changhua County along with its equipment and onshore cables. Once completed, the onshore substation will have the largest installed capacity for the offshore wind industry in Taiwan, according to Hai Long Offshore Wind Project.
The onshore substation will be connected to the 300 MW Hai Long 2A, the 232 MW Hai Long 2B, and the 512 MW Hai Long 3 wind farms.
The connection to the wind farms will be made between 2024 and 2025, and the project is expected to produce its first power in the first quarter of 2025.
The contract follows the signing of the preferred supplier agreement by TECO in September 2021 for the onshore substation with Hai Long Offshore Wind Project.
Through the partnership with TECO, Hai Long Offshore Wind Project said that it plans to further support the localisation of offshore wind technologies in Taiwan.
Hai Long Offshore Wind Project expects to use locally produced equipment on the 2B and 3 wind farms in addition to the 2A wind farm which is subject to the localisation requirements.
As a result, all four substations for the wind farms will be constructed in Taiwan, said the project holding company.
Moreover, the substation system will include high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), switchgear, air-conditioning equipment, diesel generator, and other heavy electrical equipment manufactured and supplied in Taiwan.
Located 40-50 kilometres off the coast of Taiwan and with a water depth of 35-55 metres, the Hai Long is jointly developed by Northland Power, Yushan Energy, and Mitsui & Co., and will have a total installed capacity of 1,044 MW.
